TAP: Pilots cancel strike (update)

The strike scheduled by TAP pilots between 5 and 8 July and 1 and 5 August has been cancelled after the pilots reached an agreement with the government, the Civil Aviation Pilots Union (SPAC) said on Wednesday afternoon.

However, details of the agreement haven’t been disclosed, newspaper Jornal de Negócios writes.

In a statement quoted by news agency Lusa, the union said that “this decision is a result of the agreement reached between the pilots and TAP administration through the important mediation of the government allowing the creation of a tripartite working group to solve the problems that motivated the strike”.

TAP communication director António Monteiro told PDV this morning that the flag carrier expected to lose €105m and 307,000 passengers if the strike went forward.

Around 14,000 passengers had cancelled their bookings on TAP by Tuesday meaning the airline will have to hand out refunds of some €3.5m.
