Statistics: Portuguese economy contracted 2.2% in first quarter
The Portuguese economy is weathering the crisis better than expected, since the country’s GDP fell only 0.1% from the previous quarter.
Portugal‘s GDP contracted 2.2% in the first quarter from one year ago, according to the second estimate from the National Statistics Institute (INE) released Friday, 8 June, unchanged from the first estimate reported last May.
The Portuguese GDP fell by 2.2% in the three months of 2012 from a year ago, and contracted 0.1% from the previous quarter, INE reported.
Both numbers remained unchanged from the previous estimate reported by the statistics agency in May, and are completely in line with the latest estimate from EU-wide statistics bureau Eurostat.
