Statistics: Joblessness climbs to 15.2% in April
Only Spain at 24.3% and Greece at 21.7%, in February, suffered heavier unemployment in April than Portugal, which tied with Latvia.
Unemployment continues to rise in bailed-out Portugal, with the EU statistics agency reporting revised figures on Friday, 1 June, showing that the jobless rate for April climbed 0.1 percentage points over the previous month to 15.2%.
Unemployment among Portuguese aged under 25 was especially steep at 36.3%, eight percentage points higher that one year earlier, Eurostat said.
Only Spain at 24.3% and Greece at 21.7%, in February, suffered heavier unemployment in April than Portugal, which tied with Latvia.
Eurostat revised its Portuguese figures for March downwards to 15.1% from 15.3%.
It showed average eurozone unemployment stable in April at 11%, while the EU-wide figure climbed fractionally to 10.3%.
The European Commission, one of Lisbon’s three bailout partners, has described the situation as “unacceptable”, urging the government to take further steps to cut labour costs and make the job market more “flexible” in the hope of spurring employment during the recession.
