Society: Portuguese gloomier than European counterparts

When it comes to future prospects, the Portuguese are the most pessimistic in Europe, according to a Eurobarometer survey released on Friday, 27 July.

Some 78% of Portuguese reckon the current situation is going to worsen, a figure that is much higher than the European average.

While 60% of European Union member state citizens and 61% of Eurozone citizens think the economic situation has not yet bottomed out, there are sharp geographic differences in the overall results.

Over three-quarters of citizens from Sweden, Luxembourg and Germany describe their economic situation as ‘good’, an opinion shared by only 5% of citizens from Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Greece.

The Eurobarometer survey was carried out in May and polled over 33,000 people across the European Union.

One common denominator across all geographic regions was an overall positive outlook for the European Union.

Over 80% of citizens backed closer cooperation between European Union member states to resolve outstanding problems and over half of citizens said the union would emerge stronger and more robust in the long-term.

  1. Is this a serious statement? lmao: “Over three-quarters of citizens from Sweden, Luxembourg and Germany describe their economic situation as ‘good’, an opinion shared by only 5% of citizens from Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Greece.”

High unemployment and force fed austerity, with no end in sight, all the while Germany stonewalls any prosperity programs. The EU is a pathetic failure, Portugal’s insistence in staying in the EU should be seen as the pathetic sellout that it is.
