Road Safety Authority: A quarter of road deaths not immediate

Almost a quarter of people killed on Portuguese roads in 2011 did not die immediately or on their way to hospital but succumbed in the 30 days following the accident, the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) said Monday, 13 August.

Out of a total of 891 deaths, 689 died at the scene or shortly after while another 202 died as a direct result of the accident within 30 days.

The ANSR said most fatal victims were either between 20 and 34 years-old or over 65.

The total numbers of deaths was about 8.5% lower than the previous years while injuries were 9.5% down.
