Unemployment: Jobless rate reaches record high
The country’s unemployment rate reached a record high of 15% in the second quarter, revealed Portugal’s statistics agency.
Portugal‘s jobless rate reached 15% in the second quarter of 2012, a new record high, according to data disclosed by the National Statistics Institute (INE), Tuesday, 14 August.
The unemployment rate rose by 2.9pp from the same period a year ago and by 0.1pp from the previous quarter, disclosed INE.
The number of unemployed rose in every region in the country in the second quarter.
The regions most affected by joblessness were “Lisbon (17.6%), the Algarve (17.4%), the Autonomous Region of Madeira (16.8%), the Autonomous Region of the Azores (15.6%), and the North (15.2%)”, according to INE.
The total number of unemployed rose to 826,000 in the second quarter, a 151,900 rise from the same period a year ago added INE.
