The Portuguese parliament, in a divisive vote, defeated two bills Friday, 24 February, that would have allowed gay couples to adopt children.

Presented by the small Left Bloc and Green parties, the bills failed to pass despite having gained some support from the ruling Social Democratic and Popular party benches and from the main opposition Socialists.

Only the Communists fully united behind the no vote.
