Football: Gil Vicente stuns Braga and meets Benfica
A late equaliser forced a penalty shoot-out and the home team didn’t miss the chance.
Gil Vicente continued to provide shockers in the Bwin League Cup, defeating heavily favoured Braga to reach the final.
Playing in Barcelos, Gil Vicente took the lead despite Braga’s dominance. The tone of the match was confirmed by the visitors’ two goals, turning around the score, and somewhat restoring the status quo.
But Gil Vicente had already proved in the group stage (by eliminating Sporting Lisbon) it was tough to break. Benefiting from a less than brilliant effort by former Portugal keeper Quim, Gil Vicente equalised close to the final whistle and sent the match to a shoot-out. Barcelos‘ men took a 4-2 win.
Gil will face Benfica on 14 April, in another heavily one-sided match. Nonetheless, they will look to make it three for three against ‘goliath’.
