Fires: Reconstruction aid package signed off for the Algarve
The overall objective was “to provide immediate responses to the families affected”, explained Secretary of State for Social Security Marco António Costa.
Two aid packages worth €300,000 apiece were signed into effect by the Secretary of State for Social Security Marco António Costa and representatives from the two recipient municipalities, Tavira and São Brás de Alportel, late Thursday evening.
The overall objective was “to provide immediate responses to the families affected” explained Costa and saying the financial aid covered a set of measures across the forestry, agriculture, local government and social security sectors.
Costa also pointed out that this was but a first step as houses that were subject to total destruction were not covered by these measures as reconstruction required planning and more time.
However, according to São Brás de Alportel Mayor António Eusébio, the preliminary estimate on the extent of fire damage in the municipality was in the region of €1.5m and that the immediate needs included “more thoroughly surveying the damage, defining priorities in the field and then intervening.”

My heart breaks for Tavira, my favorite city in The Algarve, and for Sao Bras.De Alportel. I have been going to Portugal since 1970 (Until 4 years ago) and it lives in my heart, always. My hopes and prayers are for the people who lost their homes.
Abracos,

I am really upset that American Airlines does not fly into Portugal. Lisbon is one of the most fabulous cities in all of Europe. I wish that someone would petition AA to fly into Portugal. It would certainly make Lisbon, and all of Portugal, a destination for more people and would bolster the Portuguese economy!
