Crisis: Public servants begin ‘week of struggle’

The Common Front of Portuguese public service unions launches a “week of struggle” Monday to mobilise support for a general strike next month against the centre-right government’s bailout austerity policies.

Common Front coordinator Ana Avoila told news agency Lusa the weeklong programme of vigils, debates and shop floor discussions aimed to prepare public sector workers for the 22 March general strike called by the country’s biggest labour organisation, the CGTP.

“The problems of workers in the public sector are the same as those of the private sector: increases in the cost of living, taxes, social problems”, Avoila said. “For this reason, this ‘week of struggle’ can serve to ready and create a dynamic for the general strike”.
