Protests against the centre-right coalition government’s policies are being planned around the country for Thursday, the day of the fourth general strike since the government took office. Public transport is expected to be among the worst affected sectors.
The general strike called for 27 June is the fourth in the last two years, uniting trade union confederations CGTP and UGT in protest against stricter austerity measures.
Fenprof trade union Secretary General Mário Nogueira said that ‘significant advances’ were made in negotiations with the Ministry of Education, but no definitive conclusions had been reached.
The strike began late Wednesday and is expected to continue until Friday morning. Lisbon bus company Carris was running more services, particularly between Cais do Sodré and Campo Grande.
The action was called in protest at SATA’s failure to implement an accord the unions have already signed with national airline TAP. The first stage of the strike coincides with the Rally Azores and the second with the Santo Christo Feast – one of the Azores’ most important religious festivals.
The Portuguese flag carrier says previously suspended flights are now available and open for sale. But TAP’s decision to suspend the strike depends on whether Azores airline SATA also adheres to the agreement.
Trade unions at flag carrier TAP-Air Portugal have issued a 3-day strike notice for next week, with 21,000 flights already cancelled.
