At first glance it looks like a traditional agricultural farm, with vineyards, pasture lands, cattle, and horses, but it soon stands out for its concept and style. The Herdade da Malhadinha – a rural hotel equipped with spa and wine cellar open to wine tourism – a place devoted to pleasure, has only a single provision: the choice of one of its several theme programmes with the duration of one week, focussing on gastronomy, yoga, writing, photography or wine tourism.

Despite the variety of experiences on offer, the property’s main drawing card is its wine production, which saw the very first harvesting distinguished with three awards at the 2003 International Wine Challenge in London. Nowadays it continues to garner distinctions with its Monte da Peceguinha, João Pequeno, Marias da Malhadinha, or Aragonês da Peceguinha varieties, and provides guests and passers-by with a wide range of activities, from simple guided tours to courses on the art of winemaking and wine tasting.

The Herdade da Malhadinha is a sophisticated place, where the modern décor elegantly blends contemporary design with the traditional furniture of the Alentejo.

Worthy of mention in the common areas is the Chesterfield sofa in white leather and a Fortuny lamp, an icon of 20th century design. With regard to the seven bedrooms and three suites the bathrooms are especially original, featuring ceramics designed by Philippe Starck (who also designed the chairs in the communal sitting room).

The kitchen, another of their main investments, is managed by acclaimed Chef Joachim Koerper, distinguished with one Michelin star. With the help of local Dona Vitalina, he serves traditional Alentejano dishes, in part made with produce grown in the farm, among other delicacies created especially for the Gourmet Restaurant.

The swimming pool and the spa, with steam bath and Jacuzzi, and offering several body and facial treatments, complement an extensive list of pampering treats which one can very easily become used to.
