If you’re already in love with the Douro valley, in northern Portugal, then you should see that you board the historical train pulled by its 1925 steam locomotive and enjoy the views which have changed very little over the past decades. With the greater part of its route running along the Douro river, the railway line takes in hills, vineyards, the river itself and the kind of tranquillity that only nature can provide. A journey back in time is what a trip on the Douro Line promises to deliver, its steam locomotive leading you away from reality and into the early 20th century.

The historical train journey on the Douro Line reopened in late June and will run until October. Its route runs mostly along the river, encompassing the beautiful landscapes of the Douro, including the Douro Vinhateiro, the world-famous wine-growing region of the valley declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The route is fixed between Régua and Tua, lasting about one hour and fifteen minutes. During the trip you can listen to local musicians and singers who will try their best to entertain you, eat a slice of meat cake and drink a glass of Port wine (all of which are complementary).

There are other things to be done during the journey. You can visit the exhibition of railway uniforms, enjoy a display of local goods, and watch the engine being turned around on the turntable.

The historical train will be running every Saturday until 13 October, and also the first four Sundays in September. Portugal’s state-owned railway company CP, which runs this trip, offers four different tour packages for those who are not staying near Régua or Tua but would still like to go on the trip. These – the North/Centre/Alentejo/Algarve packages – include a return trip from the chosen station of origin to Régua and the historical train trip.
