Despite missed opportunities, Portugal dominated the game throughout and sent the Czech Republic home with a 1-0 victory.
Portugal has qualified for the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2012 thanks to a header by Ronaldo that sent the Czech Republic home after a match dominated by the Portuguese national team.
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s diving header proved unstoppable even for Petr Cech, and saw Portugal explode into joy and relief.
Putting a gloomy start to the tournament behind him, the winger kept leading Portugal’s charge, earning him the nomination of man of the match for the second consecutive time. The captain‘s successful drive in the 79th minute finally yielded results for Portugal‘s overpowering play that translated into 14 shots against the Czech Republic‘s two.
The Portuguese national team displayed an exceptional offensive effort in the second-half and was once again left regretting a slew of missed goal opportunities. Cristiano Ronaldo hit the upright on both goals, ending the first half and beginning the second.
The tone of the match was one-sided with Portugal taking on a Czech team solely geared up for defence and trying to delay the goal as long as possible, looking for a break. However, the mismatch between the two teams left no doubt.
Portugal manager Paulo Bento underlined the contrast between Portugal’s slower first 45 minutes and the second-half.
We had a tough time getting into the match, strong defensively but shaky in the offense. Now, in the second-half , we were brilliant.”
It’s a fair win for us, we dominated and had a great pace throughout the match”, he added.
Portugal now awaits the outcome of the game between Spain and France to find out who their opponent will be on 27 June in Donetsk.
